Edmonton-AB - The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights partners with Edmonton Police to launch the fifth LoveGood food box to bring free food to Edmonton’s most vulnerable.

On the eve of International Human Rights Day, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights expands its LoveGood Food Exchange by teaming up with the Edmonton Police Service to strengthen food accessibility during COVID-19.

On December 9th, a fifth box was delivered stocked with food to police headquarters in downtown Edmonton where officers act as guardians of the program. The box is named “Bobby” and is the latest in a grassroots support program, which operates similar to a pantry.  Since May, a total of four boxes have distributed over 50,000 food items to Edmontonians in need. The food box is a place where people can go to access free food with dignity and where others can donate items to help others.

This initiative began as an experiment when an old recycling bin was placed in Paul Kane Park in central Edmonton. The idea was spearheaded by Quinn Wade, also known as “Harry Schnitzel “of the LoveGood drag family and the crown prince of the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wildrose.  Quinn decided to name the boxes - with the first given the name, “Beatrice”, to make the program friendlier and less accessible for those needing help.  The effort is supported by the John Humphrey Centre and Edmonton’s Food Bank to supply goods for the boxes.
