Lessons in Advocacy: Youth Centred VS Youth Serving
Roots4Change is a network of young people from diverse backgrounds working together to engage in dialogue and learning around systemic issues in our education and justice systems from the perspective of those with lived experience. R4C Calls to Action are about building education and advocacy tools for youth facing and navigating injustice in the education/justice systems.
Youth-serving organizations who get paid to advocate and educate, often perpetuate oppression. This session will look at models that uplift and centre youth voice, identity, and expression.
Dr. Crosby has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Alberta and works as the Director of Legal Education, Media and Research at Native Counselling Services of Alberta in Edmonton. Her research focuses on the importance of “relational environments” for youth that centre on relationship-building, both on the personal and communal levels and accounts for the different ways in which we form relationships to self, others, and the physical spaces. Dr. Crosby is a community connector. She uses her skills as an academic, researcher, and writer in combination with a natural love for humanity and an intrinsic desire to see individuals and communities express their highest integrity, creativity, and harmony.
We are honoured to have Dr. Daena Crosby lead this session for youth ages 14-24.
Zoom details will be sent the day before the session.
