2022 Human Rights Award Gallery

We held our 14th annual Human Rights Award Ceremony at the Government house with her Honour the Lt. Governor Salma Lakhani on October 5th. Take a look at how the evening unfolded with photos of our recipients and wonderful guests.

We are so lucky to call this year's recipients our local heroes and to celebrate their heart and work to make this city a place of inclusion where all belong, are valued and participate, and strive to make the City of Edmonton a human rights city. We are also grateful to have had guests such as, City Councillor Keren Tang, Founding Member of JHC Gurcharan Singh Bhatia, and Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

Our night was made extra special by our performers, volunteers, and of course, our guests! Sissy Thiessen Kootenayoo of Wase Saba Experiences started off our evening with a beautiful dance and a warming flute melody. Sissy is a Two Spirit Treaty 6 Nakota Sioux, Cree & German cultural educator, Powwow dancer, instructor and multidisciplinary performing artist.

The Sticks and Stone percussion band accompanied us through the post-awards celebration with their up-beat marimba ensemble at the reception.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our lovely volunteers, Hitomi, Yaw, and Meagan as they made sure the evening ran seamlessly! A round of applause and another big thank you, to the community and to our guests for making this awards night unbelievably special and unforgettable.

Finally, we would also like to appreciate the JHC staff members who supported the smooth-running of the evening. With very special thanks to Idara Effiom and Jessica Kinsella who planned, executed, pulled last minute strings, and worked miracles for this Human Rights Award night!
