Virtual roundtable in honour of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week.
In the fall of 2021, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (JHC) hosted a virtual roundtable and network gathering in honour of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week. The event consisted of members of the legal community within Alberta, and focused on how best to address and assist victims and survivors of hate crimes through strengthening a community of legal practice. The roundtable discussion consisted of four lawyers, who were all asked to identify barriers facing victims and survivors of hate crimes. The panelists developed concrete and tangible recommendations to be put into practice to support victims and survivors, and how to build a strong provincial legal network that can be accessed to provide legal guidance and assistance on hate-related crimes within our province. The key findings from the roundtable discussion were developed into a policy brief outlining the barriers identified and recommendations developed, which was then disseminated to participants and other stakeholders within the legal and human rights field. JHC intends to continue to strengthen the connection and practice of the legal community in supporting victims and survivors of hate-related crimes, as well create a network of lawyers and legal professionals willing to to work on hate-related cases in the future through hosting another virtual roundtable discussion and an anti-oppression session supporting lawyers in honour of the upcoming Victims and Survivors of Crime Week in May 2022.
The next roundtable will be on May 25, 2022
