Making Social Strides: Featured Speakers

 
 

On March 24-25, 2023, Canadians working to address online identity-based disinformation, misinformation and hate will get together in a hybrid format to share foundational knowledge; existing supports to respond to online hate and discrimination; and design collaborative ways to address an issue that is omnipresent in our lives. We’ll be hosting 5 sessions over the weekend with some fantastic guest speakers lined up!

Session 1 – Misinformation & Disinformation
March 24, 2023, 7:00 - 8:00 PM MST
Deepen your knowledge and understanding of these two main concepts and their relation with discrimination and hate online and how it impacts different age groups.

Featured guest speakers: Krishana Sankar, Science Advisor & Community Partnerships Lead at ScienceUpFirst; Zachary Weeks, Accessibility Consultant and passionate advocate for disability issues and social justice; and Caitlyn Fowler, Senior Research Advocate at Evidence for Democracy (E4D).

 
 

Session 2 – See It, Report It: Use and Efficacy of Reporting Mechanism

Join a panel of experts to discuss how accessible and effective are online reporting mechanisms, and what can be done to improve them.

Panel Speakers include Daniel Panneton - Director of Allyship & Community Engagement at Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center; Jeje Mohamed, Senior Manager - Digital Safety & Free Expression at PEN America;and Lana Cuthbertson, Founder & CEO of Areto Labs.

 
 

Session 3 - Legislation Update

During this short presentation, experts will provide an update on legislation being created to tackle online hate and discrimination. 

Featuring Parveen Parmar, Human Rights Officer at the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, and Terence Hamilton, Policy Specialist at UNICEF Canada and Director at the Canadian Coalition for the Rights of the Child.

 
 

Session 4 - What do you propose?

March 25, 2023, 2:00 - 3:30 PM MST
Our guest organizations, Areto Labs and The Fair Play Alliance,  will discuss what they are working on and doing to tackle online hate and discrimination.

Areto Labs is a tech company focused on creating safe and welcoming online communities. The Fair Play Alliance is a global coalition of gaming professionals and companies committed to developing quality games, encouraging healthy communities and awesome player interactions in online gaming.

 
 

Session 5 – Cultivating and Strengthening Online Communities

March 25, 2023, 3:30 - 4:30 PM MST

This closing session invites participants to reflect on their learnings from the entire weekend and what they can build within their own organizations and teams going forward. Although legislation may be stagnant, you will leave hopeful in knowing what is happening and what is possible!
