March 30: International Day of Zero Waste

The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the global shift to use renewable practices and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Humanity generates an estimated 2.24 billion tons of solid waste annually, of which only 55 per cent is managed in controlled facilities. Every year, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems. There are ways we can all get involved - Click here to read 10 actions you can start with!

Working towards the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), JHC has done community engagement over the past three years with food stakeholders in Edmonton, Regina and Winnipeg. From these we have developed Areas for Action to help guide advocacy and decision-makers to ensure the Agenda 2030 SDGs can be achieved. You can find our full Agenda 2030 Food Security Reports at: Publications and Reports — John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (jhcentre.org)

JHC along with trusted partners is hosting the Ignite Change Now! Global Human Rights Convention from December 1-10, 2023 to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Day 8 of the convention will be centred on the theme: Dignity in Poverty: the Role of Human Rights. This aligns well with the Agenda 2030 goals and work being done to eliminate poverty and work towards food sovereignty. Food sovereignty as a strategy can help us reduce the carbon footprint on our food consumption. We invite you to submit an activity to take place during the Convention centred along a series of intersecting themes and integrating various methods of engagement and delivery.  We welcome speakers, panel discussions, roundtables, workshops, arts and other activities engaging popular education, skills building, connection and inspiring action. All ideas and experiences are welcome. To submit an Expression of Interest to host programming, CLICK HERE
