Navigating Xenophobic Discourses at the Metropolis Conference
The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights was recently at the Metropolis Conference with Alexandru Caldararu from Norquest College and Oliver Kamau from Edmonton Immigrant Service Association to present “What's Old is New: Navigating Xenophobic Discourses in Canada.” This session explored the worrying rise of anti-migrant sentiment in Canada, and how newcomers are scapegoated during times of socio-economic and political turbulence. With participants, we dove into Canada’s historical, contemporary, and future manifestations of xenophobia and developed strategies to combat it today.

When we have these conversations on historical impacts of racism and discrimination, we need to acknowledge that these issues do not exist in a bubble nor are they relegated to the past. There are real and serious implications for how they impact people now, which will set the stage for how it is addressed in the future. There is a concerning trend of rising opposition to migrants, much of which can be seen online in sensationalist newspapers and on social media.
Online spaces tend to be eager for content that promotes polarization, and in a day and age where polarization among people is increasingly on the rise, it is essential that we take steps to engage in policy that seeks to address that. At JHC, we are continuing that conversation on policy needed to address safety and polarization in the digital space. We welcome you to join us for the Youth Policy Forum: Bridging the Digital Safety Gap and Shaping Policy for Tomorrow, a three-day hybrid event from April 25–27, 2025, at Ortona Arts Hub in Edmonton and online via Zoom.
