Volunteer Profile: Chelsea Carter
What part of the province do you live in?
Edmonton Area
How and why did you first get involved with JHC (the community response initiative)?
I originally was looking for something different, and a different organization to become familiar with. I wanted to volunteer for people who struggled to advocate for themselves. I liked that there was a street outreach, and a pantry as well. I loved the idea of not turning anyone away and just saying "no" .. it's important to me to help my community and those with the smallest voices struggling really need the support and it makes me so happy to do it.
What is your current role within JHC?
I started out as an advocate and street worker but am now a caseworker.
What are your (volunteer) activities and what do they involve?
Leading my team's, providing support, assisting with listening, note-taking, drafting in cases.
How long have you been a part of the community response initiative?
Almost a year.
What's it like to be a volunteer for this cause?
It’s pretty eye-opening to hear of the discrimination and human rights issues a lot of individuals face alone but it's rewarding to be able to help others find closure, get resources and find supports.
What has surprised you most about working on this community initiative?
The amount of incidences but seeing the amount of helping hands makes it's easier for sure.
Are there any learnings/ challenges you have experienced through this work? Please tell us about those
My challenges have always been the writing so thank goodness we as advocates/caseworkers/volunteers-in-general work and support each other while trying to make a difference in our communities.
