The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, a non-profit charitable organization in Edmonton,  Alberta, works to advance dignity, freedom, justice, and security through collaborative relationships and transformative education on peace and human rights.

The Centre’s Education Coordinator will be a self-driven, collaborative team member who will work to develop, plan and implement educational programming. This position will focus largely on supporting the work related to in-school facilitation and education, teacher professional development, anti-racism and anti-oppression education, facilitation, and youth programming.  The position will also support editing, writing and research as needed.

 

The Centre’s Education Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:

  • Development and implementation of educational programming within schools. This year in particular will support Paint the Rails (PTR) and Social Stride to outreach and provide programming in schools:

    • Provide strategic direction and support to Social Stride, a network of young people working to educate and address online misinformation and hate.

    • Help coach and support this team of young people to facilitate in school sessions. 

    • Disseminating the upcoming JHC Paint the Rails book and educating school teachers on the accompanying teacher’s resource material. The  Paint the Rails book and teacher resource will be released on September, 2022. 

    • Create and facilitate opportunities for educators to engage and know how to use the PTR resources in the classrooms.

  • Work with the JHC’s Communications Team to ensure increased outreach, marketing and communications of programming available to support schools and teachers;

  • Coordinate and facilitate anti-racism and anti-oppression programming and workshops;

  • Work with Project Development Team to support writing and editing of grants that enable the work related to schools and education;

  • Coaching and mentorship to youth and volunteers involved in educational programming. Our goal will be to extend and build a group of volunteers who can contribute to the facilitation of education to younger generations;

  • Liaise and cultivate relations with teachers and partners related to school programming;

  • Work with the Evaluation and Research team to support analysis, documentation and evaluation of projects as required; and,

  • Other activities as agreed upon.

Skills, Education and Requirements:

  • Education degree and/or equivalent experience

  • Competence and capacity of popular education methodologies

  • Knowledge of curriculum design and development

  • Capacity to use google suite for working and collaboration

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Supervisory experience is an asset

  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team

  • Be based in Edmonton

  • Ability to facilitate in-person and virtual activities
