Khair For All Reflection
On October 11, 2021 a group of individuals, including Mayor Sohi and Councillor Michael Janz, and local organizations, including JHC, Leftovers Foundation, We Together Strong, and FRAP gathered at the Organic Box for a media event to showcase and promote a social enterprise called “Khair for All”.
The Khair for All program, designed and implemented by community members connected to the Multicultural Health Brokers, comes at a time when food security has skyrocketed due to inflation and the aftermath of a global pandemic from which many are still struggling. Food is something we all need for survival and connects us across cultures, practices, status and ideas. The approach of Khair for All uses food as an anchor to engage racialized communities, increase food accessibility and create opportunity for inclusion and well-being while promoting a sense of self and dignity, connection to culture, and self-sufficiency. The produce boxes are ordered online and are very affordable - a small box is $25 and a large box is $50; both include a variety of staple fruits and vegetables and a dozen eggs. A $6 delivery fee will allow it to be delivered right to your doorstep. No membership, income assessment, or subscription is required to order. The fruit and vegetables are high quality and it is estimated that buyers can save anywhere from 20-40% in comparison to some local grocery store chains.
The Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative has partnered with The Organic Box to expand this program and bring affordable, culturally relevant food to Edmonton and area. Khair for All operates in partnership with a large network of key intersectoral partners and works to build strong relationships and connections to the communities it serves. One of its main goals is to provide affordable, culturally relevant and fresh fruits and vegetables to the community. But it is also a step towards promoting self-sufficiency and honouring community members' dignity in getting nourishing fresh produce at good prices. Food is a basic human right, and options such as Khair for All help promote sustainability, reduce food waste, promote inclusion, dignity, nutrition and affordability for all.
