We Are Hiring!: Education Lead Position

Background:

The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights is a leading non-profit organization based in Edmonton, Alberta, dedicated to advancing dignity, freedom, justice, and security through collaborative relationships and transformative education on peace and human rights. Our work spans Edmonton, Alberta, and the Prairie provinces, with ongoing collaborations at the national level.

We are currently seeking an Education Lead who will report to the Executive Director and oversee both adult and youth education initiatives. This position will collaborate with JHC team members to provide leadership in educational programming for children and youth, support professional development for educators, and manage adult education contracts and training.


Role Description

As the Education Lead, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic leadership for educational initiatives centred on young people, including the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of lessons and programs.

  • Engaging in the design, facilitation, and delivery of training and educational programs.

  • Leading collaborative efforts to enhance the skills and capacities of educators in integrating and delivering human rights and peace education. 

  • Collaborating with the Communications Team to ensure effective outreach, marketing, and communication of educational programs.

  • Partnering with the Director of Adult Education to coordinate and facilitate adult education contracts and training, including promoting programs, organizing facilitators, responding to training requests, evaluating and liaising with organizations seeking services.

  • Providing coordination, coaching, and mentorship to youth, volunteers, and facilitators engaged in educational programming.

  • Building and maintaining relationships with educators and key partners involved in youth programming.

  • Driving the growth and development of educator networks and collaborations aimed at advancing human rights and peace education.

  • Collaborating with the Executive Director on project management tasks related to your portfolio of initiatives.

  • Leading assigned projects by delegating tasks, managing project outcomes, coordinating team meetings, and ensuring timely reporting.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity and knowledge of human rights and peace education, with a particular focus on popular education methodologies.

  • Degree in education or a related field.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, including oversight of timelines, budgets, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships with educators, institutions, and community organizations.

  • Expertise in designing, developing, and delivering educational materials, including curricula that align with human rights and peace education principles.

  • Strong commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, diversity, and inclusion, with the ability to engage diverse participants and communities.

  • Familiarity with tools for virtual education, e-learning, and program delivery, including learning management systems (LMS) and online collaboration platforms.

  • Experience in monitoring and evaluating educational programs, including data collection, reporting, and impact assessment.

  • Ability to facilitate difficult conversations on topics related to human rights, social justice, and peace education.

  • Proven leadership abilities, including mentoring staff and volunteers, and fostering a collaborative and positive working environment.

Terms of Contract

  • Location: Based in Edmonton, AB

  • Earliest Start Date: October 1, 2024

  • Contract Duration: Maternity leave coverage ending December 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.

  • Hours: 35 hours per week, with a flexible schedule.

  • Compensation: $32-36/hour, depending on experience.
