Press Conference - Strengthening Alberta’s Human Rights Commission

The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights (JHC) is honoured to invite you to the in-person press conference hosted at Edmonton City Hall on October 17, 2023 from 12:00 - 12:30 pm MDT. At this time we will be releasing the “Alberta Human Rights Commission: Identifying Barriers and Solutions to Access” research report. Following the press conference, we welcome attendees to stay with us until 2 pm MDT for refreshments, to share feedback on the report and identify strategies to move the recommendations forward.

With the final goal of contributing to the strengthening of the human rights mechanism, JHC and several partners engaged since October 2022 in research that aimed to identify barriers experienced by people using the human rights complaint mechanism at the Alberta Human Rights Commission and Tribunal, and to propose tangible actions for strengthening the provincial human rights mechanism. As part of the project, we have conducted interviews with users of the Commission and experts with specialized human rights knowledge, which helped us understand the first-hand experience of engaging with the mechanism. In this public research report, we identify barriers to users to engage with this remediation mechanism and recommendations to address them. Please join us as we share the results of the research to deepen the learnings and collectively identify  ways to implement those recommendations. After the press conference, we welcome you to share your feedback on the results of the report. A future online session will be held for those who were unable to attend the press conference and who wish to provide feedback.
