Bethel Place Food Pantry is a safe place for in-need community members to access free food within the Alberta Ave area. With the barriers put up for families to access food through the schools and the deepening of the COVID pandemics impact on the most vulnerable, as a collective, our goal has been to ensure dignity and access to food. Since its opening in October 2020, the pantry has served about 4500 people and their families, with an average of 95 people in 2 hours! Personally, I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved in this initiative.

The JHC Community Kitchen was created as a way to bring people together to help feed our fellow humans as the pandemic exacerbated financial and food insecurity in our city and across the world. We have found that access to nutritious food is pushed to the margins for many people in our communities. Over the last 16 months many people have stepped up to cook meals in their homes to help people in their neighborhoods.

On July 8, 2021 at 6:30 pm, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights will be holding their Annual General Meeting and electing the 2021/2022 Directors of the Board. Terms for the Board are currently three-year renewable terms. Please fill out the following questionnaire if you are interested in serving on the Board and being considered by the Nominating Committee.
The Board meets on a monthly basis, currently the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm. We are a governance board requiring a commitment of approximately ten hours per month.

A group of 13 agencies have joined together to help people in vulnerable situations, including those without homes, newcomers to Canada and single mothers, get through the pandemic.
"We all were over-stretched doing bits and pieces," said Angelica Quesada, co-chair of the Edmonton COVID-19 Rapid Response Collaborative.
"Now we are taking a wider, more collaborative, more wholesome view of the needs and the scope and trying to respond in a more organized way."
The City of Edmonton is funding the group $1.5 million to run programs until the end of December.
The group, led by the Action for Healthy Communities Society of Alberta and includes the Canadian Native Friendship Centre, Multicultural Health Brokers, the Edmonton Immigrant Services Association, the Islamic Family & Social Services Association and the Africa Centre, will receive $1.5 million in funding from the city.
The program, which will run until the end of December, will focus on three key needs: food, mental health and income support.
In addition to those immediate needs, the collaborative is also looking at how each group might be able to help people through their recovery time as well, Quesada said.

The project will be called Social Stride. Social Stride aims to address hate and discrimination issues by providing education, countering misinformation, and supporting and amplifying victims' voices. Our vision is to create a healthier online environment by modelling peace and dignity.
